The Art of Film Projection
The work of film projectionists takes place out of sight. What happens in the projection room behind the audience remains unnoticed as long as no mistakes are made. With a projection performance and a film program, this event gives an introduction to the art of film projection. The film PREMIÈRE SÉANCE (France 1995) by Philippe Truffault dips back into history to examine the first cinema screening by the Lumière brothers in Paris in 1895. The garishly colorful experimental film COLORFILM(USA 1972) by Standish Lawder shows how film strips are transported into music via a 16mm film projector. The documentary POR PRIMERA VEZ (Octavio Cortázar, Cuba 1967) takes us to Cuba. Film projectionists travel into the remote hinterland with a travelling cinema and show films in a mountain valley where there is no screening venue of any kind. The children and adults thus watch a film for the first time. The projectionists’ truck serves as a both a bedroom and projection room for the travelling cinema.(Stefanie Schlüter)
